Terry and the Sandbox Team Steal the Show at Helen Day Art Center

On January 16th Terry and the Sandbox Team made their debut at the Helen Day Art Center’s exhibit “Play”. The Helen Day Art Center is a non-profit organization in Stowe Vermont whose mission is to “Enhance the human experience through the visual arts.” The Sandbox team is a group of Champlain College students, led by MFA student Terrence Sehr and faculty member Ken Howell, that work at the Emergent Media Center with a focus in design. The team consists of graphic artists, designers, and programmers who have a passion for interactivity and play. It is no coincidence that such a passion won them two spots in this art center’s “Play” exhibition.

Adults and children enjoying “Play” exhibit

Adults enjoyed wine and cheese as they discovered the many different interpretations of what it means to play with art. Charmingly, the adults were just as hands on as the children who appreciated the immersive and tangible aspects of the art works. Thus, the greatest observation of the night was that adults and children were able to interact and play with these works with mutual enjoyment. The room was filled with warm light and classical jazz, setting a rich atmosphere that emphasized the aesthetics like no other. Families enjoyed the Sandbox’s team Graffiniti, in an area ideal for play, using both of their hands freely to change the color of the paint and the size of the line to create a 2-D masterpiece of their own.

Also featured was the Ephemeral Glass, which allowed everyone to interactively play by touching the screen, to change the colors and shapes.

Terry and the Sandbox team did not hesitate to present and explain their work to anyone with questions, and they did so with aptitude and professionalism.

In addition, there are many other great works included by other artists, such as a recyclable fun-house, crocheted basketball nets, a large light switch that lit up the word ART if turned on, and much more. The exhibit is a playful, and enjoyable experience for everyone. You don’t want miss out! Get to Stowe before the exhibit is over, on April 12, 2015, and enjoy the show! And don’t forget to play with Graffiniti and the Ephemeral Glass while you’re there.
