If you’re looking for the EMC team right now, try checking under the layers of dust, moving boxes, and displaced furniture. A big expansion project is in the works and we couldn’t be more excited to bring a new level of innovation to Champlain College and the surrounding community! The Emergent Media Center is still located at Champlain College’s Miller Center building on Lakeside Avenue, but we’re expanding into the office space that previously housed Champlain’s Continuing Professional Studies department (you’ll find them on the second floor now).

As part of the expansion we’ll be doubling the EMC’s footprint to include the ever-exciting Maker Lab! Equipped with a 3D printer, laser cutter, vinyl cutter and many other tools, the Maker Lab will be an innovative and creative place for anyone to explore the intersections between digital technologies, physical components, and interactivity. The possibilities are really endless. Read this post for more information about why a Maker Lab is pretty much the coolest thing. In fact, the Champlain College Maker Lab will be the first academic institution on the east coast to have a ProJet 4500 – the most sophisticated 3D color printer out there. Details about usage of the space, hours, tools, materials cost, etc will be forthcoming, so stay tuned.

Adding the Maker Lab isn’t the only piece of the transformation puzzle. Here are other zones you’ll find at the new EMC!

• Dedicated studio space for graduate students
• 25 computer work stations (PC, Mac, and laptop docking)
• Collaborative group work spaces
• Meeting spaces, small and large, private and public
• Lounges and casual work/meeting spaces
• Secure equipment storage
• Graduate fellow offices
• Faculty and staff offices

… all with a lot of updated, cutting-edge technology (but don’t worry, Post-Its and markers will still be commonplace).

It’s an exciting time at the Emergent Media Center and we look forward to celebrating our new space (and new possibilities!) with a big opening shebang in mid-late April. The details are still being “nailed down”, but keep your eyes out for an announcement soon! You’re invited!
